If I can’t be re-baptized, what can I do to mark my return to faith?
In John 13, Jesus famously tied a towel around his waist and washed his disciples’ feet. The apostle Peter attempted to refuse, feeling it was improper for the master to wash his followers’ feet (an act of a Gentile servant). But Jesus says “unless I wash you, you can have no part with me.” Here we see he’s talking about more than just rinsing off their feet! Peter immediately goes to the other extreme, asking Jesus to wash all of him. Now Jesus replies that once someone has “bathed” (we believe this implies baptism), they only need their feet to be washed. So this is a symbolic act both of serving one another and more significantly, of returning to the cleansing waters of baptism.
Secondly, make much of Communion. Even if you have wandered from the covenant promises of the Lord for many years, you are welcomed as a guest at the Lord’s Table.
So, tell us (or your leaders), and find an opportunity to testify before the congregation! Your story is our joy - like the widow who found her lost coin or the shepherd who found his lost sheep, your return is worth a great celebration!
