What about re-baptism? Can/should someone get baptized again if they’ve come back to faith after being away?
Generally we believe baptism should happen only once, just as Jesus was crucified once and rose once, and he does not need to be crucified again. He died for our sins long before we were born, much less long before we were old enough to understand and confess our faith in him. Any baptism offered by any group of believers who are gathered in His Name and who truly, authentically worship Jesus and offer baptism according to his command in Matthew 28:18-20 (“In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) should be viewed as a legitimate baptism. For those who were baptized young and later came to faith, consider the providence of God: the story he started in your life back then has come to beautiful fruition: the hound of heaven started tracking you as a young child and has lovingly caught you. If your baptism was a private affair, not an act of a church, we might consider baptizing you again. Generally, however, even if someone was baptized as an infant and spent their entire life until their 80s in rebellion, if they come to faith we celebrate that the story God started with their baptism is coming to a beautiful resolution in their faith.
