How do converts (older kids or adults) fit into the baptism discussion? What does the “covenantal” view say to these individuals?
The Covenantal view should LOVE believer’s baptism, because that’s how a new covenantal line starts. We absolutely long for people who are not yet believers to come to faith, and when they do so, to join with the people of God through baptism. In Romans 9-11, the apostle Paul is discussing covenant membership - the Jewish people were, by birth (and signified by circumcision), covenant members. The question for Paul was, how are Gentiles added to the tree? He uses another tree illustration: they are “grafted in,” which means a new branch is added to the trunk and eventually becomes part of the tree - ideally, bearing fruit and new branches like the rest of the tree as it grows. The ceremony for that grafting process is baptism!
So, if you haven’t been baptized but have become a believer, allow your church community to share in the joy by bringing you into the covenantal community through baptism. If you have young kids, we’d love to baptize your whole household, and join with you as you raise them in the love of Jesus, teaching them in word and deed that he is Savior and Lord.
