Can I still be a Christian if I don’t want to be baptized?
Covenantal baptism is a sign of God’s promise, not necessarily the fulfillment of the promise. To borrow a phrase from Church history, the “sign” and the “thing signified” do not have to happen at the same time. The more important thing is the posture of your heart. Therefore, if you have surrendered to Christ in faith, you are a Christian, regardless of whether or not you’ve been baptized. However, if you have had opportunities to be baptized and have rejected them because you don’t want to, then you are disobeying a clear command of Jesus. If that’s you, you are a Christian living in willful disobedience and you may need to ask yourself the hard question of whether you really have granted Jesus Lordship in your life. If this is you, contact your church right away: it will be a joy to baptize you ASAP!
