Peace Through Uncertain Times

I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity…I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:11-13

We live in uncertain times.  Everyday the news report more job layoffs, increased government debt and falling stock markets.  If we believe everything we hear doomsday is right around the corner.  The never-ceasing message is that our lives are tanking, we have no money and more so we have no control.  So how do we reconcile this with our belief that the Christian life is one of victory and peace?

God is in control. God permits events to happen.  He respects free will, but He also is omnipotent and has an eternal plan.  If we lift our eyes to Him and away from the television, we see the truth about our circumstances.  We have a choice and an opportunity to spiritually grow and materially thrive.

Take steps of faith Our responsibility is to manage the finances God gives us in a responsible manner from the Bible’s perspective.  What does this mean?  Continue to give to God no matter what your circumstance.  It is His money after all.  Honor Him with your first fruits.  Take control of your finances.  Develop a spending plan and track your income and expenses.  If you don’t know how to do this, make it a priority to talk to someone who does.  It may mean that your lifestyle should change, but God will honor you.

Peace through the storm Memorize Philippians 4:11-13 and repeat it every time you worry about money, feel disenchanted or can’t see your way out of a negative situation.  God will provide for all your needs perhaps in a way that will reveal his awesome power to you.

These times are an opportunity for all of us to grow spiritually and deepen our faith that God is in control.  He is the great provider, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega.  And it may help to just turn off the news for a while and open our Bibles.
